Kenneth Rogoff, Thomas D. Cabot Professor of Public Policy and Economics, Harvard University
This Time is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly

Kenneth Rogoff is Thomas D. Cabot Professor of Public Policy and professor of economics at Harvard University. Previously, he served as chief economist and director of research at the International Monetary Fund and as director of the Center for International Development at Harvard. Dr. Rogoff is co-author of the books Foundations of International Macroeconomics and most recently the 2009 national bestseller This Time Is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly (of which signed copies will be available at the Symposium). He holds a B.A. in Economics from Yale University and a Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In his talk...
For Dr. Rogoff, each economic crisis is unique, yet follows certain patterns of previous financial crashes. A significant market event cannot be predicted or analyzed based solely on what has come before, but we must apply the knowledge of what we’ve learned as we look ahead to the future.  Together with Carmen M. Reinhart, Rogoff has deeply examined eight financial catastrophes, and in his keynote, he will use history to show how that there are patterns and cycles worth paying attention to, and they have never been more relevant.

With Richard Grinold, Ron co-authored Active Portfolio Management: Quantitative Theory and Applications. The 2007 book, How I Became a Quant, includes his essay describing his transition from physics to finance.  He is a 2007 winner of the Bernstein Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy award for best article in the Journal of Portfolio Management, and he also serves on the editorial advisory boards of the Journal of Portfolio Management and the Journal of Investment Consulting. Ian has a Ph.D. in political science from Stanford University, and currently teaches at Columbia University. He grew up in Boston, and now lives in New York and Washington, DC.

In his talk...
Ian will discuss the challenge of managing risk in a world that’s trending toward state capitalism, especially in authoritarian states. To navigate globalization’s choppy waters, every business leader analyzes economic risk when considering overseas investments or looking at market exposure. But are we to look beyond reassuring data about per-capita income or economic growth to assess the political risk of doing business in certain countries?  Ian will explain that by blending political and economic risk analysis, investors can make savvier decisions – seizing valuable opportunities around the globe while avoiding danger zones.
