C = Private Consumption (i.e., durable goods, non-durable goods, and services)
I = Investment
G = Government Expenditure (i.e., federal defense, federal non-defense, and state and local government spending)
Note
For some countries, government spending is defined strictly as consumption expenditures, and investment spending is included in fixed capital spenidng and inventories.
EX = Exports of Goods and Services
M = Imports of Goods and Services
Note
GDP can also be expressed as GDP = C + I + (EX – M), where C = Total Consumption (private and government).
GDS (Global Depositary Receipts/Shares)
Global Depository Receipts (GDRs) were developed to facilitate trading in foreign securities in the Euromarkets, eliminating the need for investors to be concerned with settlement, timing, and currency-related issues. The shares are actually held by the custodial bank in the country of the underlying share, hence the name "receipts."
The custodial bank may create the GDR to represent as many shares as it deems appropriate, thus affecting the GDR ratio, which will not always be 1:1. This will account for price differences between the underlying share and the GDR.
There can be a U.S. component for a GDR (usually a -144A- issue), which settles through the Depository Trust Company. The foreign component of the GDR settles and trades through Euroclear and Cedel. GDRs are generally listed on the Luxembourg stock exchange, although a few trade in London. GDRs are generally denominated in U.S. dollars.
